It isn’t for nothing that Chemnitz is nicknamed the ‘city with brains’.
Numerous inventions and six times more patents than anywhere else in 19th-century Germany made Chemnitz world-famous. This spirit of invention still rules the third-largest city in Saxony today – not only in research institutions, but also in the arts and culture.
Architecturally, Chemnitz is also a unique experience: the Kassberg district invites visitors to stroll through one of the most beautiful Wilhelminian areas in Germany. The art nouveau period finds its unique expression in the famous Villa Esche, the house built by Henry van de Velde for the stocking manufacturer Samuel Esche.
