Bautzen, the unofficial capital of the Sorbs in Upper Lusatia, is more than 1000 years old.
The 17 towers, bastions and the town walls, which have been preserved on almost their whole length, become the town very well.
The ‘Old Waterworks’, a brilliantly clever pumping works, is a famous symbol of the town on the Spree River. St Peter’s Cathedral is also something truly special, because Catholics and Protestants have been sharing its chancel and nave for their services since 1542, making it the only non-denominational church in eastern Germany.
The Sorbs, a small Slavonic ethnic group, is the reason why signs all over Bautzen are written in two languages, and why the town is also home to the only bilingual theater, the German-Sorbian Theater.
