Görlitz – the easternmost town in both Saxony and Germany – is a unique architectural monument and despite its 930 years very much alive.
The medieval old town reveals an impressive collection of architectural monuments from almost all periods: Wilhelminian and art nouveau facades, hall buildings from the medieval clothworkers’ guild, a whispering archway, accessible fortifications, and the only preserved department store as an example of early German store architecture.
In all, there are 4000 of these buildings. A great attraction in the five-aisled hall church of St Peter and St Paul is Eugenio Casparini’s famous Sun Organ. With the ‘Holy Sepulcher’, Görlitz is also famous for having a faithful replica of the holy site in Jerusalem.
