Zwickau: for music enthusiasts it is the town of Robert Schumann, for historians the pearl of western Saxony and for fans of two-stroke cars, Trabant Town.
Its various nicknames show the many faces of the town on the Mulde River. Clothmaking and silver mining once shaped the town, and the Silver Route from Zwickau to Dresden bears witness to this exciting period. Zwickau’s town center shines with such buildings as St Mary’s Cathedral, the Gewandhaus and the Town Hall, the Robert Schumann Monument and the Robert Schumann House, and the most beautiful art nouveau building in Saxony, the ‘New World’ Concert and Ball House.
The manufacture of cars in more recent times has also left its traces in Zwickau, for instance with the unique August Horch Museum.
