Even at first glance, Torgau, the former main royal seat of the electors of Saxony captivates its visitors with its past, rich in history, and its lively present.
The town on the Elbe River, where Martin Luther once lived and worked, is one of the most beautiful Renaissance towns in Germany. A stroll through its narrow alleys reveals over 500 single architectural monuments from the late Gothic and Renaissance. On the market-place the massive Renaissance Town Hall with its precious round oriels is much admired.
An attraction of the town church of St Mary’s is the altarpiece ‘The Fourteen Auxiliary Saints’ by Lucas Cranach the Elder. A sight to be admired is Hartenfels Castle, the largest preserved German castle of the early Renaissance, which is now shining in a new light.
