If you want to holiday in the Ore Mountains, you have to prepare yourself for a lot: mountains, century-old handicrafts, towns full of history, living mining traditions.
Almost everybody knows the region’s nutcrackers and little smoking men, which are especially popular around Christmas.
Oberwiesenthal and Altenberg are famous winter sports centers, and the region is a walker’s paradise. Towns like Annaberg-Buchholz, Marienberg and Freiberg reflect the wealth of the glittering mining past.
Car manufacture and music characterize the west of Saxony – the heart of the region is in Zwickau. The art nouveau town is synonymous for music lovers with composer Robert Schumann, and for car enthusiasts with motor pioneer August Horch.
