Saxony – enjoying culture with all the senses in the State of the Arts
The Free State in the south-east is Germany’s most popular destination for culture-loving tourists
Saxony – the state with the densest structure of theaters and orchestras in Germany, the oldest civic theater in the world (Freiberg), the land of the Semper Opera House and the Church of Our Lady. Almost a quarter of all cultural tours within Germany lead to Saxony, Germany’s most popular destination for culture-loving tourists. The musical landscape of Saxony is without equal in the rest of Germany. Internationally-acclaimed ensembles and soloists are still making music today not only in the Semper Opera in Dresden, the Gewandhaus Concert Hall in Leipzig and the Opera House in Chemnitz, but also in castles, stately homes and historical settings. 2010 sees the 300th anniversary of the discovery of porcelain in Europe, which went out into the world from Saxony. Without the highest quality of craftsmanship, the making of musical instruments in the Vogtland, lace from Plauen and high-class watches from Glashütte would not exist. And whoever has never seen the State Art Collections of Dresden simply doesn’t know Saxony yet.
