Saxony’s towns and cities: metropolitan flair and small-town market-places
On the one hand: the Baroque, modern elegance, industrial architecture and art nouveau; on the other: dreamy romanticism and lively city life. Saxony’s towns and cities are an attraction for every visitor. With its unique Baroque architecture, the castles and meadows along the Elbe River, Dresden presents itself as a UNESCO world heritage site. Leipzig, with its historical merchants’ houses, arcades and courtyards, shows its great commercial and trade-fair tradition. Chemnitz, modern and innovative, is the ‘city with brains’. More and more tourists enjoy wandering through narrow cobbled-stone alleyways and strolling around market-places, some of which are 1000 years old, such as those in Bautzen, Görlitz and Meissen. This is hands-on cultural history in Saxony.
