We are introducing to you some of the most important ones, including Augustus the Strong’s palaces and gardens, defiant fortresses and mighty medieval castles, palaces and monasteries set in picturesque scenery. Each one of the buildings has its own eventful story to tell, audible and visible in chapels, halls, dungeons and towers.
Palaces in Saxony
The grandiose building projects of the Middle Ages, as well as the Renaissance and Baroque periods, came to splendid fruition because wealth and a taste for art coincided in time: Nature and culture, scenic river valleys and the wonderful gardens of palaces, high cliffs and strong fortresses, extensive forests and the romantic seats of nobility all form scenes of unforgettable contrast everywhere in Saxony.
Castles in Saxony
Prosperity flourished behind thick walls: Almost all strategically important points in Saxony sit upon secure military installations. Spread out like pearls on a chain in the deep valley of the Mulde or towering as the highest fortresses in Germany.
Gardens and parks in Saxony
Just as the life at court, nature had to yield to the will of the rulers. In Baroque gardens hedges of boxwood and pruned hornbeams run in and out like the most complex court intrigues. Even the countryside parks of later centuries, which appear to have naturally grown, are in fact the result of careful planning.
Monasteries and convents in Saxony
The significant monasteries and convents in Saxony are evidence of those historic times before the region, which later became known as the „Homeland of the Reformation”, first became Christianized.
